Funded Projects

eEducation Group

The eEducation Group administers several state and nationally funded projects that center on online alternative certification programs in science and mathematics, web-based curriculum development and professional development for teachers. Current projects include Accelerate Online, the Middle School Aerospace Scholars (MAS) Program, and the National Space Biomedical Research Institute (NSBRI). Past projects include being the Texas partner for the South Central Regional Technology in Education Consortium (SCR*TEC-TX), the Technology Mentor Fellowship Program (TMFP), the Ocean Drilling Distance Learning Program, the Partnership for Environmental Education and Rural Health (PEER), and the Knowledge Innovation for Technology in Education (KITE) Project. Math TEKS Connections (MTC) Project

The Math TEKS Connections (MTC) Project was funded through Texas Education Agency to develop and disseminate professional learning opportunities to K-12 mathematics teachers, K-12 administrators, teacher educators, and preservice teachers. MTC is particularly strengthened by the collaborative nature of its development.  Texas A&M University is the fiscal agent and lead partner in the project, but the core partnership groups include three Regional Education Service Centers, Columbia University, and Wireless Generation. The project has three core objectives: (a) to facilitate greater awareness of Math TEKS content connections and the connections between the TEKS and instruction and assessment, (b) to facilitate mathematics teachers' greater ability to effectively instruct using TEKS, and (c) to facilitate a common core of knowledge and method between teachers and administrators and between K-12 and teacher preparation programs. MTC has developed and is in the process of disseminating five 2-day TOT-format professional development modules for Texas' math teachers: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and geometry. In addition, the project is developing a series of modules for teacher educators based on current research on promising practice in mathematics teacher education and designed to serve as resources for mathematics methods instructors. The preservice modules will be disseminated to teacher preparation programs across Texas, including TAMU and other system universities, community colleges, and alternative certification programs. The modules will be available online, but the primary method of promoting and disseminating them will be through a seminar planned at TAMU for May 18-20, 2007, to which teacher educators from across the state will be invited.

Middle School Mathematics Project

The Middle School Mathematics Project team studies how to provide, on a large scale, the professional development and continuing support teachers need to improve student achievement in mathematics. Over five years of a longitudinal study, the team will examine how the use of specific research-based instructional strategies in the classroom, supported by professional development and highly rated curriculum materials, are related to lasting improvements in student learning. P-16 Educational Improvement Consortia (PEICs)

This project, which has a base on all 9 Texas A&M campuses throughout the state, is a continuation of the Regents' I teacher performance and production grant. (Regents' I included the effectiveness of the teacher preparation program and strengthened the novice teacher induction opportunities in "high need" areas.) Regents' II goal is to improve the P-16 academic performance, specifically in math the first year and extending to science the next. English Language Learners will be highlighted in the efforts. Included are efforts to increase the high school completion rates in all participating high schools, community colleges and universities. Also included is an effort to improve the federal (AYP) and the state (TAKS) accountability performance in participating schools. Click here to visit the project site.

PRISE ~ Policy Research Initiatives in Science Education at Texas A&M University

Many issues are associated with high school science teacher quality, teacher shortages, and student learning.  These include quicker certification routes, changing demographics, and increases in numbers of out-of-field teachers.  Knowledge of strategies that result in successful science teacher recruitment, retention, and life-long learning is useful in high schools confronting these issues.  PRISE uses a systems approach to link educational research with policy development.  Our goal is to create an articulated and coherent model of continuous professional development that improves the quality of science teaching and makes significant contributions to reducing the current shortage of qualified high school science teachers.  For more information, please visit the PRISE website at http://prise.tamu.edu.

Reads & Counts

At Texas A&M University, tutors participating in the Reads & Counts Program are part of a long-standing institutional commitment to community service.  The Reads & Counts Program contributes to the improvment in the literacy skills of the children with whom the TAMU tutors are tutoring.  Our students and our neighbors are benefiting from this relationship.  Texas A&M University is proud to be a part of the No Child Left Behind Program.  This program originated with the America Reads Challenge program.  For more information, please visit the Reads & Counts website at http://www.coe.tamu.edu/tutors/.
