Math TEKS Connections Project

The Math TEKS Connections (MTC) Project was funded through Texas Education Agency to develop and disseminate professional learning opportunities to K-12 mathematics teachers, K-12 administrators, teacher educators, and preservice teachers. MTC is particularly strengthened by the collaborative nature of its development.  Texas A&M University is the fiscal agent and lead partner in the project, but the core partnership groups include three Regional Education Service Centers, Columbia University, and Wireless Generation. The project has three core objectives: (a) to facilitate greater awareness of Math TEKS content connections and the connections between the TEKS and instruction and assessment, (b) to facilitate mathematics teachers' greater ability to effectively instruct using TEKS, and (c) to facilitate a common core of knowledge and method between teachers and administrators and between K-12 and teacher preparation programs. MTC has developed and is in the process of disseminating five 2-day TOT-format professional development modules for Texas' math teachers: K-2, 3-5, 6-8, 9-12, and geometry. In addition, the project is developing a series of modules for teacher educators based on current research on promising practice in mathematics teacher education and designed to serve as resources for mathematics methods instructors. The preservice modules will be disseminated to teacher preparation programs across Texas, including TAMU and other system universities, community colleges, and alternative certification programs. The modules will be available online, but the primary method of promoting and disseminating them will be through a seminar planned at TAMU for May 18-20, 2007, to which teacher educators from across the state will be invited.
