Special Education Student Receives Faculty Senate Aggie Spirit Award

5/14/08

Ashley Marshal, class of 2007 and a special education major, is the College of Education and Human Development's Faculty Senate Aggie Spirit recipient.

Dr. Glenda Byrns, a clinical assistant professor in the educational psychology department, nominated Marshal, who is from Aledo, Texas, for the award.

"Ashley has persevered and triumphed over cancer while maintaining a positive outlook and displaying an uncompromising zest for life," wrote Byrns. "During [the fall 2007] semester, Ashley underwent bi-weekly chemotherapy sessions while taking 15 hours of coursework, completing the required hours of field-based practicum and posting a 3.8 GPA for the semester."

"Ashley will complete her dream of becoming an Aggie teacher and Aggie graduate in December 2008, only one semester late," Byrns continued.

Marshal would like to teach special education in the College Station ISD upon graduation. She and her family traveled from Aledo to College Station, Texas, to receive the award at the Faculty Senate meeting on Monday, May 12. Also attending the award ceremony were classmates Marshal relied upon when missing a class for medical treatment as well as medical professionals who have supported Marshal throughout this journey.

Marshal's battle with cancer while balancing college requirements has taught her that she can't always control what is going on in her life.

"I am more aware of others and have learned that the world does not revolve around me," said Marshal. "I've received so much support and helping hands from everywhere. I wake up each day and know that each day is more beautiful than the last. You can't take life for granted."

In addition to overcoming the obstacles associated with battling cancer and being an excellent student, Marshal exemplified selfless service. While undergoing chemotherapy, she was part of a support group for children with cancer in the American Cancer Society, participated in the annual Buddy Walk, and participated in community service activities with the Student Council for Exceptional Children.

"Ashley Marshal is an inspiration to many as she continues to celebrate life while overcoming adversity," wrote Byrns. "She lives the Texas A&M core values of excellence, integrity, leadership and selfless service. Ashley is truly deserving of the Aggie Spirit Award."
