He received a Ph.D. in 1999 from the Cognitive Studies in Education Program at the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to coming to the United States, he completed his undergraduate education in mathematics and also a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education in China. During his academic career, he had served as a mathematics teacher for four years, as well as a faculty member at Beijing Normal University and the University of New Hampshire before joining Texas A&M University in 2006. As a student and a teacher first in China and now as a professor in the United States, Dr. Li has gained various experiences in school education and higher education. The cross-national experience has not only promoted him to take an international approach in his research in mathematics and teacher education, but has also provided him a unique lens to identify educational opportunities and value educational development and equity. After coming to TAMU, Dr. Li has indeed expanded his research collaborations internationally. In particular, he has worked together with more than 50 scholars from more than 15 education systems all over the world through various research and publication projects. In addition to co-editing several books and special issues of journals, he has published over 100 articles that focus on three related lines of studies (i.e., mathematics curriculum and textbook studies, teachers and teacher education, and classroom instruction). His publications and international collaborations have led him to gain a leadership role in research nationally and internationally. Dr. Li served as an Associate Editor for School Science and Mathematics, and a guest editor for several other journals including International Journal of Educational Research and ZDM - The International Journal on Mathematics Education. He has been invited to give many talks internationally and has served as a consultant for several projects and institutions. He also holds an honorary professorship from Southwest University in China. Dr. Li has frequently organized and chaired many group sessions at various national and international professional conferences, such as AERA, NCTM Research Pre-session, PME, PME-NA, ICME-10 in 2004, ICME-11 in 2008, and ICME-12 in 2012.
