U5 Policy for SEED Minor Students

U5 Policy for SEED Minor Students

Students enrolled in the Secondary Education (SEED) minor are expected to complete clinical teaching before graduating from their bachelor’s degree program. However, in limited circumstances and subject to program approval, students may be permitted to return the fall or spring semester immediately following graduation to complete the clinical teaching experience as a U5, or Postbaccalaureate Undergraduate. U5 status is a non-degree seeking undergraduate classification for students who have already earned a bachelor’s degree and are returning to complete remaining undergraduate requirements.

Students needing to consider the U5 status must be aware of the following:

  • An application for a U5 designation will not be processed until the primary content exam is passed
  • If the primary content exam is not passed by the set deadline, students are ineligible to appeal for an additional attempt and pursue U5 status
  • An undergraduate non-degree seeking student does not qualify for financial aid through the University. Becoming a U5 may include a loss or reduction of aid previously received as an undergraduate, as well as the start of the federal loan grace period and an earlier timeline for beginning repayment.
  • Consult with Aggie One Stop to review and confirm these financial implications before making a final decision
  • If financial aid is needed, students can adopt the Secondary Education-Clinical Teaching Minor to have clinical teaching hours incorporated into the program of study
  • U5s must complete their clinical teaching during the long semester immediately following their graduation. Failure to do so will be considered a break in continuous enrollment and will result in an ineligibility to clinical teach
  • As undergraduate non-degree students, U5 students are not permitted to enroll in courses until all degree-seeking students have had the opportunity to enroll. U5 enrollment begins on the first day of open registration and may be subject to additional college or program restrictions.
  • U5 status is generally unavailable to international students except in limited circumstances.

To apply for U5 status, please contact the SEED minor program by emailing SEEDminor@tamu.edu.
