Curriculum & Instruction Graduate Programs with an emphasis in Urban Education

The Urban Education program offers two graduate programs: a 36-hour Master of Education (M.Ed. Online) degree and a 64-hour Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree. The program is committed to developing leaders nationally and globally in urban settings, and is one of the greatest producers of urban scholars and researchers in the nation. Students work closely with the Center for Urban School Partnerships, and are able to work in the field of urban education through research, publications and outreach programs.

Degree Programs

Master's Program

The online master’s degree plan emphasizes the integration of theory and practice, a strong knowledge base in evaluation, practitioner action-based research and community-based research. Foundational courses in the degree plan focus on theory of curriculum development, an analysis of teaching behavior and cultural foundations of education. The required urban education electives focus on issues, policies and the history of urban education. Opportunities for international travel, conference presentations and publications are available throughout the program.

Doctoral Program

The 64-hour doctoral degree plan emphasizes strong research and analytical skills, a broad knowledge base and an individuated area of concentration. The program aims to achieve national and international visibility of its students. Some of the courses meet on the Texas A&M University campus, some are offered online and some are hybrid courses, meeting both in person and online. The coursework includes foundational courses in instructional, curriculum and philosophical theories. Foundational courses also include history of education and a basic disciplinary knowledge in research courses. The foundational courses guide the students into research courses in which the doctoral student and their advisor decide upon a research path. Students are provided opportunities in study abroad programs, presenting at conferences as well as publishing books, articles and research briefs.
