Literacy with Reading Specialist Certification Option

Designed for undergraduate students majoring in elementary, middle grades, bilingual, or special education, the Early Start program provides students with the opportunity to start M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction with Literacy emphasis courses (up to 12 hours) while enrolled in their senior (U4) year of studies at Texas A&M.

Credential in Effective College Instruction by ACUE and ACE

Requirements for Admission to Early Start


  • U4 status (minimum 90 credit hours)
  • 3.25 GPA
  • No remaining UG coursework except methods & clinical teaching
    • Can take one GR-level course with methods
    • Can take one GR-level course with clinical teaching
    • Can take two GR-level courses over the summer if there are no other courses needed

Sequence of Coursework


Summer: Advised by faculty → Fall: C3 + RDNG 612 or RDNG 613 →  Spring: C4 + RDNG 603

Fall: C3 + RDNG 612 or RDNG 613 → Spring: C4 + RDNG 603 → Summer: Advised by faculty

Spring: C3 + RDNG 630 → Summer: Advised by faculty → Fall: C4 + RDNG 602

 

Requirements for automatic admission to M.Ed. in Curriculum & Instruction w/Literacy Emphasis:

  • Must pass all GR-level coursework with A’s or B’s (3.0 or higher)
  • No instructor concerns
  • Submit UniCAS Graduate Application a semester before graduation (clinical teaching)
  • Complete the Personal Statement within the UniCAS applicationFall/Summer: March 1st
  • Spring: October 1st
  • M.Ed. Curriculum & Instruction; Literacy Emphasis
  • Must decide PRIOR to applying whether continuing program as distance education or in-person
  • Must also decide and indicate if you will be pursuing the ReadingSpecialist certification option (no additional coursework)
